We are proud of our first responders and their efforts in saving a life!
Thursday, October 25th at approximately 5:55PM, our PD and BSO Fire responded to a report of a suicide attempt in progress on the beach in the north end of Town. Our personnel arrived, searched for and located a female who was suffering from and emotional/mental health issue. She had left a note indicating her desire to end her life. At the same time she was located, she had entered the surf and was in fact proceeding further out into the ocean.
Attempts to verbally convince her to return to shore failed so at that point, and at great risk to their own personal safety, Hillsboro Beach Police Department Sergeant Robert Gianino and Officer Dan McGrath, along with BSO Fire Rescue Firefighter Marc Juliano entered the surf. They were able to reach the victim in time and bring her back to shore, saving her from drowning! We therefore award each of these public safety professionals, Hillsboro Beach Police Department's Life Saving Award.
This team effort was assisted on scene by Hillsboro Beach Police Sergeant David Clark and Officer Austin Pope. Sergeant Clark verbally engaged the victim from shore thereby distracting her attention and allowing the personnel in the water to reach her in time. He was assisted by Officer Pope, handling the victim's husband, collecting vital information and calming his emotional state. Logistical assistance was provided by Communications Resource Specialist Virginia Thomas and Officer Steve Kelly notifying various resources for further assistance. We therefore award these staff members, Hillsboro Beach Police Department's Certificate of Commendation.
We are most proud of our staff and the outstanding team effort exhibited in concert with our partners in the BSO Fire Rescue Department. Most of all their combined efforts resulted in an excellent outcome!
